Conservatory Building Construction

Step by Step Construction Guide

The following photographs show the various constructions stages of a conservatory from base upwards. These images have kindly been provided by Ultraframe.

Note that this is not a definitive construction guide and it is provided here to illustrate the general construction process. Your site location, positioning of any pipes and the type of soil etc will determine actual construction especially with regard to the conservatory base and your builder will be able to provide expert guidance in this respect.

The intended site.
Footings have been dug which in this case expose an underground pipe which will require steel mesh reinforcement to protect it from crushing.
Concrete is poured into the trench to form the footings.
The concrete is levelled ready for building on.
The inner cavity brickwork is constructed.
Compacted hardcore is laid to form the base.
Sand bed laid over hardcore ready for damp proof membrane to be laid.
Damp proof membrane laid over sand and internal brickwork. Any optional floor insulation is placed over the membrane.
Additional concrete added to raise the base to the finished floor level.
This floor is being floated ready for tiles to be laid. For a carpet surface the floor would normally be screeded after installation of the conservatory is completed.
Constructing the outer wall using matching stone to match the house wall.
The base is completed with the construction of the inner wall.


The construction of this particular conservatory called for optional cavity trays to be installed due to the exposed site location and the stone external house wall onto which the conservatory was to be fitted. Most conservatories do not require this option.

Lead flashing is fitted and in this case optional cavity trays.
House wall is pointed once lead flashing is fitted.
Erection of the conservatory frames begins with positioning the welded cill onto the dwarf wall and adding the frames.
Once the frames are installed the aluminium eaves beam is fitted.
The ridge and glazing bars are installed.
The roof is glazed.
Door and frames are glazed.
Internal eaves beam PVCu trim are fitted.
The completed conservatory.
